Elly is a Silicon Valley based tech startup created to help patients living with a chronic disease. It is an audio companion app designed to motivate patients by discussing their condition and leaving them with an inspirational message to conquer the day. 

A custom typeface was created for Elly and a smile shape icon used as a secondary brand element. A light and bright palette was created for funding and brand templates to give Elly a distinctive brand in the digital healthcare space. The brand is growing fast and has received funding from Google and Morgan Stanley.

The process


197 million Americans live with a chronic disease which costs the US economy $2.9 trillion annually due to poor participation in their own health.

Elly increases cancer patient’s activation to improve health outcomes. Each day, patients listen to a 90 second ‘Daily Summary’, which contains a motivational story, a condition specific topic and an inspirational message to conquer the day. Elly also provides patients with content around motivation, exercise, mindfulness, sleep, self-care and nutrition.

Elly aims to create meaningful and positive outcomes for patients. Building a smile into the brand is a great way to visually represent this outcome. Different typographic treatments were created to see which type and smile combination worked best.
